Five hot spots in the lithium battery industry in 2023

Jan 11, 2024

At the end of the year, looking back at the whole year, the lithium battery industry in 2023 can be described as having ups and downs.

New projects are continuing unabated, innovative technologies are emerging; oversupply concerns are looming, and material prices are plummeting... Although the road is tortuous, the industry has to move forward. Fortunately, it is still a foreseeable and high-quality track.

Veike.com Lithium Battery takes stock of the top ten hot events in the lithium battery industry in 2023 to get a glimpse of the turmoil in 2023.

1. Honeycomb Energy/Ewin Lithium Energy/CATL won a large order from BMW

According to news in October, Honeycomb Energy has received nearly 90GWh of production capacity orders from BMW in Europe. Domestic orders of nearly 70GWh will be provided by CATL or Everview Lithium Energy.

If the price per watt-hour is estimated at 0.6 yuan, the value of BMW's order will reach 96 billion yuan, exceeding 10 billion euros.

It has become a trend for more and more large overseas companies to place orders for lithium batteries to Chinese battery companies. This is also a reflection of the increasing global competitiveness of Chinese battery companies.

2. The price of lithium carbonate plummeted

Battery-grade lithium carbonate futures on the Chinese market are a new product in 2023. At the beginning of the market on July 21, the price was above 200,000 yuan/ton.

However, in just the past four months, the main futures lithium carbonate 2401 has seen a low price of 85,650 yuan/ton. Of course, the one that has seen a lower price is lithium carbonate 2403, which fell to a low of 82,700 yuan/ton on December 6.

Today, whether in the futures market or the spot market, the price of battery-grade lithium phosphate is around 100,000 yuan/ton.

In fact, not only lithium carbonate, but also the prices of lithium battery raw materials in 2023 will basically drop significantly. For the industrial chain, the decline in raw materials is beneficial to the cost reduction of battery products and new energy vehicle manufacturing.

3. China Airlines ranks among the top four in the world

In September 2023, China New Aviation installed 3.6GWh of power batteries in vehicles, with a market share of 5.3%, surpassing Japan's Panasonic and advancing to fourth place in the world!

China New Airlines ranked seventh in the world in 2021, and then climbed all the way up to fourth in the world in a single month in September 2023, surpassing South Korea's Samsung SDI, SK On and Japan's Panasonic.

Weike.com Lithium Battery believes that just as Chinese battery companies have repeatedly received overseas orders, the continuous breakthroughs of China New Aviation are also a reflection of the continuous strengthening of China’s battery power in the international market.

4. The lithium battery industry is booming overseas

In January 2023, CATL announced the launch of mass production of lithium-ion battery cells at its first overseas factory in Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany. This marks the official start of production of the factory.

In December, CATL announced that the Hungarian factory with an investment of over 50 billion yuan was under construction as planned.

Not only CATL, but also news about power battery companies such as China Innovation Aviation, Guoxuan High-Tech, Honeycomb Energy, Everview Lithium Energy, and Envision Power are building factories overseas. This has led to the expansion of battery industry chain companies overseas.

5. Industrial and commercial energy storage becomes a hot topic

2023 is regarded as the “first year” of domestic industrial and commercial energy storage. According to incomplete statistics, there are currently more than 500 industrial and commercial energy storage system integrators vying for space in this emerging market and accelerating their deployment.

From 2019 to 2022, the scale of China's industrial and commercial energy storage industry increased from 357.6MWh to 1834.3MWh, with a compound annual growth rate of 72.46%. For comparison, data show that China's newly installed industrial and commercial energy storage capacity in the first three quarters of 2023 is 1.8GW, and is expected to reach 2.5GW for the whole year, and will reach 9.3GW by 2025.

At present, the competitive landscape of China's industrial and commercial energy storage industry is diversified, with rapid industry development and fierce competition.
