At the 2023 World Energy Storage Conference sub-forum held on November 10, Zhang Yanli, the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, released the "2023 Energy Storage Equipment Industry Development Report". This is also the first time that the department has released this report in the industry.


According to data analysis, the global newly put into operation energy storage installed capacity will reach 30GW in 2022, with an annual growth rate of more than 160%. Among them, the new scale of new energy storage exceeded 20GW, four times that of 2020. China, Europe and the United States have become the three major markets for the energy storage equipment industry.

By the end of 2022, my country's energy storage installed capacity has reached nearly 60GW, with an annual growth rate of nearly 40%. Among them, the newly installed capacity of new energy storage has reached 7.4GW, a year-on-year increase of 200%.

From the perspective of energy storage technology, pumped hydro storage and lithium-ion batteries have now reached the level of commercial application, and my country's lithium-ion battery energy storage, compressed air energy storage and other technologies have also reached the international leading level. Since Sony's commercial application in 1991, the energy density of China's lithium batteries has increased by nearly 4 times, and the cycle life has increased by more than 10 times; the all-vanadium redox flow battery industry chain has initially taken shape; energy storage technologies such as sodium-ion batteries have also entered engineering demonstration application stage.

Through the collection of demonstration application projects, we can find that with strong national and local support, the scale of individual energy storage projects is steadily increasing. The single-machine scale of pumped storage power stations that have been put into production has reached the 400MW level, and the latest single-unit installed capacity has reached 450MW. The pilot demonstration application scale of flow batteries and compressed air energy storage has reached the 100MW level.

When focusing on the relevant situation of electrochemical energy storage equipment, Zhang Yanli pointed out that the carrier of electrochemical energy storage equipment is energy storage battery. The technical route is divided into lithium-ion battery, flow battery and sodium-ion battery. The upstream and downstream of the industrial chain mainly include It is composed of positive electrode, negative electrode, separator, electrolyte and other raw materials.

According to statistics from some research institutions, global energy storage battery shipments exceeded 140GWh last year, of which 4 Chinese companies were included in the top 5, namely CATL, BYD, Yiwei Lithium Energy and Ruipu Lanjun. Overall lithium batteries The industry chain market concentration is relatively high, with CATL, BYD and Everview Lithium’s combined market share exceeding 70%.

At present, large energy storage cells with more than 300Ah have become the mainstream in the industry. The energy density of a single cell has exceeded 200Wh/kg, and the energy storage cycle life has exceeded 12,000 times. According to the latest status of pilot demonstration applications, the maximum size of a single lithium-ion battery energy storage power station that has been put into production has reached 200MW/800MWh, and is gradually moving towards GWh. As large-capacity batteries above 300Ah enter the mass production stage, the competition for energy storage system products above 5MWh has begun.

Guodian Longyuan Woniushi all-vanadium redox flow battery energy storage power station, as the longest-running all-vanadium redox flow battery energy storage project in the world, has been operating continuously for 11 years and still maintains a 100% capacity retention rate. The current maximum scale of pilot demonstration applications of flow batteries has reached 100MW/400MWh.

From the perspective of typical business models, the power supply side and the grid side are still the main scenarios for energy storage applications. There are two typical business models for user-side energy storage. One is the energy storage built in the Zhejiang Huzhou Jinggong Machinery Factory that was put into operation last year. Based on the peak-valley electricity price difference in Zhejiang, the project can already achieve two charges and two discharges per day, so the monthly peak-valley arbitrage has reached about 500,000 yuan. In addition, there is the integrated optical storage, charging and inspection charging station project invested and constructed by CATL.

Zhang Yanli pointed out that the main driving force of the domestic energy storage market is state subsidies for new energy distribution and storage. The mature profit model of off-meter energy storage is still being explored. In the future, it will continue to explore the fields of electric vehicles, New scenarios such as electric engineering machinery, electric ships or construction applications continue to expand application fields and application models, driving the large-scale development of diversified technologies and the continued decline of kilowatt-hour costs.

At present, the energy storage industry, which is mainly based on electrochemical energy storage, is very hot, but the difficulty of balancing between economic cost and safety and reliability is gradually increasing. At present, with the development trend of energy storage batteries with large capacity and long-term energy storage, the number of series and parallel batteries is gradually increasing, so the safety issues of energy storage batteries are also facing more severe challenges. In the follow-up, we should rely on national or local pilot demonstration projects to continuously summarize practical experience, further improve the technical standard system of energy storage equipment, and strengthen product safety assurance capabilities.
