How to Safely Store Lithium Batteries

Feb 21, 2023

One of the most important steps when storing lithium batteries is to ensure that the battery terminals do not come in contact with any metal or other battery terminals. Your battery (and the device containing it) should be stored in a sturdy cabinet, locker or shelf where it cannot be bumped or jostled by machines or people. This will prevent your battery from shifting, keeping the terminals out of the way. Consider using battery terminal covers where applicable for additional protection. Or keep them in their original packaging, if that works for you. Finally, to keep them from touching each other, keep the batteries separate.
Store batteries in a mild, dry climate; the word "climate" here sounds like the battery has a preferred natural habitat or ecosystem, but you know what we mean. The environment in which the battery is located should be mild. Batteries should be stored away from sunlight, high temperature and humidity. Keep the reservoir area ventilated and dry, and maintain a relatively stable temperature. The ideal battery storage temperature is about 59 degrees Fahrenheit, but most room temperatures will suffice. Unless your room is outside the –40°F to 122°F range for some reason, in which case we have to assume you live in an igloo or volcano, and we can't realistically recommend that you stay in your home Store batteries anywhere.
